Buying guide for best bosch dishwashers

Ade Hennis
Written by Ade Hennis

Updated March 2023

Dishwashers have become an indispensable part of the modern kitchen, and today’s models come with impressive smart features. Bosch manufactures high-end dishwashers that give you the ultimate in flexibility, cycle options, and quiet operation.

They have lines that balance economy with cleaning ability and those that use the latest technology to conserve energy and water. Bosch strives to create a functional dishwasher with the technology to meet the demands of fast-paced life.

Bosch doesn’t cut corners on quality and manages to create models in a broad price range, so there’s something for everyone. Whether you’re looking for a model that eliminates the need to rinse or simply want the quietest dishwasher on the market, Bosch has models that work for you.

If you have hard water, you'll need to use Bosch descaler a few times a year to remove hard water residue and limescale buildup. After putting in the descaler, run the dishwasher on its hottest, longest cycle. In addition to descaling, you should use Bosch dishwasher cleaner to remove any greasy buildup.

Key considerations

Types of dishwashers

Bosch classifies their dishwashers by the location of the control panel and the size of the unit.

Front panel

The name says it all: the control panel on these models is on the front of the door. This gives easy access and allows you to view the settings while the dishwasher is running. Their appearance isn’t as sleek as top panel designs, but for many, the ability to check settings while the dishwasher is in use is invaluable.

Top panel

Top panel controls are hidden on the top of the door, and they stay hidden while the dishwasher is operating. If you want sleek and minimal, one of these models is the way to go. Some designs have a TFT display that shows the setting and time left in the cycle.

Custom panel

Custom panel dishwashers come with the option of a custom front panel/door that looks like a cupboard door rather than a dishwasher to match your kitchen decor. They’re technically a type of a top panel model. However, customization costs more.

Compact

Do you want luxury in the confines of limited living space? You’re in luck — Bosch makes compact 18-inch width models with the same features as their full-size 24-inch dishwashers.

ADA compliant

ADA compliant models are 32 inches in height (versus the standard 33 to 34 inches) so the control panel is easily accessible from a wheelchair.

Features

Rack system

Standard third rack

Bosch’s standard third rack system includes a third rack at the top of the dishwasher designed for silverware and cooking utensils. It includes a V-shaped space for a few taller items, but it’s really designed to open up space on the other two racks by relocating silverware.

MyWay rack

If you need more space than a standard third rack offers, the next step up in Bosch’s third rack systems is the MyWay rack. It includes a third rack in the upper part of the dishwasher designed for bowls and other deep dinnerware. Moving these hard to stack items off the other two racks opens up significant space for pots, pans, or more plates.

Flexible third rack

The flexible third rack system includes a third rack at the top of the dishwasher for deep items like bowls, but also includes adjustable tines. This system gives you the ability to customize the capacity and placement based on the needs of each load.

VarioDrawerPro

The VarioDrawerPro is a third rack with foldable sides to give you more custom loading options. It’s often found on models that include adjustable tines on all racks so you can customize the configuration for each load.

RackMatic

The RackMatic feature allows you to adjust the position and angle of the second and third rack. The second rack can be raised or lowered, while the top rack can be lowered, raised, or tilted to accommodate items on the lower racks. Models with this feature can have as many as nine possible rack positions.

Cycle options

While most dishes are adequately cleaned using the Auto Cycle, there are circumstances where you may need some extra options.

  • Glass cycle: This cycle has lower water pressure and temperature to protect delicate glassware. If you regularly entertain or often use stemware, this cycle is for you.
  • Sanitization: A normal cycle will sanitize, but if you’re looking for a cycle with extra heat, the sanitize cycle bumps up the temperature and drying time to target and kill bacteria.
  • Eco cycle: Are you trying to lower your carbon footprint? The eco cycle uses less water and power, which saves the environment — and money on operating expenses.
  • Extra dry: This cycle has a higher drying temperature to decrease drying time.
  • ExtraWash: Tough, dried-on food might need some extra help. This cycle is designed to pull off the toughest of messes.
  • SpeedPerfect: In a hurry? This cycle cleans in 25% less time, though it doesn’t work on heavily soiled dishes.

Smart features and remote control

Some Bosch dishwashers have a Home Connect feature that allows you to control the dishwasher via phone or tablet, effectively giving you remote control. You can start or stop the cycle from anywhere and get notified if there’s a leak or other problem. This feature also alerts you when the dishwasher needs a detergent refill. You can even set it up to automatically order detergent from Amazon when you get low.

Handle design

Some Bosch lines have different handle options. Most of the time, it’s a matter of aesthetics or personal preference, but it may also be a matter of what your children are less likely to grab when they’re in the kitchen.

  • Bar: A simple bar protrudes from the front of the dishwasher door. You might want to choose something else if you have young children who are climbers or who may pull the door open.
  • Custom: If you want to customize the handle to match your kitchen, custom front panels and handles can be ordered.
  • Pocket: Pocket handles are found on top control models only. It’s is a rectangular cutout that fits seamlessly into modern and minimalist kitchens.
  • Recessed: A recessed handle is similar to a pocket handle except it’s found on front panel designs. It’s a rectangular or semicircle cutout either above or below the control panel. As far as front panel designs go, a recessed handle is the sleekest option as it doesn’t leave any hardware protruding from the dishwasher.
  • Scoop: Scoop handles are only found on top panel models and feature a semicircle “scoop” recessed into the door.

Info light

Bosch dishwashers’ impressively quiet performance can leave you wondering if they’re working at all. Some models have a red info light that shines on the floor, so you know if it’s running.

Low decibels

Low decibels are what Bosch dishwashers are known for. There are three sound ratings available:

  • Silent: 47 to 50 decibels
  • SuperSilence: 42 to 46 decibels
  • SuperSilencePlus: 38 to 41 decibels

Keep in mind that the lower the decibel level, the more expensive the dishwasher.

24/7 Aquastop

The Aquastop system prevents leaks by detecting leaks or cracks in the base of the dishwasher. Once detected, the dishwasher automatically turns off, potentially saving you from a wet disaster.

TFT display

Some top panel models have a high-definition TFT display where cycle and time information is visible at all times. These displays have large, clearly defined text to keep you informed of where your dishes are in the cycle.

Finish

Bosch stays on trend and up-to-date on their finishes:

  • Black
  • Black stainless steel
  • Stainless steel
  • White
"Dishwashers have a filter at the bottom to catch any leftover food particles. This filter needs to be cleaned every few months. Bosch has made their filters to be easily removed, washed by hand, and reinstalled."

Bosch dishwasher prices

Inexpensive: A basic front panel Bosch dishwasher with sound levels at 48 to 50 decibels starts at $500 to $750. These baseline models have a stainless steel tub with a polypropylene bottom. They have two racks and the Aquastop safety system.

Mid-range: In $750 to $1,000 range, there are front and top panel models with a full stainless steel tub as well as more finish, handle design, decibel level, and rack options. Most of these models have an increased 30% loading space due to a standard third rack. Some have the Rackmatic system, creating several rack positions. You’ll also find models with adjustable tines and low 44 decibel operation. Compact and ADA compliant models fall into this price range.

From $1,000 to $1,500, the dishwashers have touch controls, MyWay third rack and flexible third rack options, and may have RackMatic capabilities. These models have the most interior flexibility and quietest cycles. Custom front door and handle options are found at this price point.

Expensive: The most expensive dishwashers start at $1,500 and go just above $2,000. These models run at a near silent 38 decibels, have full-color TFT displays, and three telescoping racks. Plus, they include three flexible rack options and adjustable tines so you can customize the configuration for each load.

Tips

  • Bosch’s Home Connect feature lets you connect your dishwasher with a Bosch diagnostics team who can remotely check on the dishwasher’s systems. While they may not be able to fix everything remotely, they can give you direction on how to best fix any issues.
  • Some models are designed to be used with a water softener that helps eliminate water spots.
  • When loading large or tall items, be sure they are not blocking the arms of the sprayer. Models with a RackMatic feature allow you to raise or lower the middle rack to make room for these items. Models with adjustable tines also let you accommodate awkwardly sized cookware.

Other products we considered

Bosch has an impressive lineup of dishwashers. Here are a couple of models that didn't make it but could still be the perfect fit for you. The Bosch 500 Series runs at an exceptionally quiet 44 decibels and has the convenience of a third rack, with some models having adjustable racks and tines. There are several finish and handle options. The Bosch 24-inch 100 Series is the base model line, but still runs quietly enough that some models have an info light. It comes in a top or front panel design, and some have a third rack and a sanitize cycle.

Bosch uses a condensation drying system instead of heating elements to dry dishes. The stainless steel of the tub cools faster than the dishes, which causes condensation to build on the sides. The water then trickles down the sides of the tub and out the drain. This system dries well and is safer for plastics.

FAQ

Q. Do Bosch dishwashers completely dry dishes?
A.
Bosch’s condensation drying system eliminates the need for a heating element, which makes it safe for plastics. If your dishes — particularly your plastics — aren’t dry, try the extra dry feature or sanitize cycle, which adds both time and heat to the cycle. Both of these features are only found on select models, so be sure to check before buying if dry dishes are a concern for you.

Q. How clean do the dishes need to be before I put them in the dishwasher?
A.
You do not need to pre-rinse dishes when using a Bosch dishwasher. The pressure, angle, and water temperature remove food. However, you still need to scrape off the largest pieces of food so as not to clog the filter.

Q. Are there Bosch dishwashers with child locks?
A.
Bosch doesn’t include control locks on any of their models. Families with young children may want to invest in a top panel model that keeps controls hidden except when you're entering the settings.
