We’ve rounded up all that Disney+, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video are offering in June, while also combing through the lists to highlight some notable shows, films, and documentaries.
The latest Walt Disney Animation Studios adventure is a rare offering, not just in the annals of Disney films, but major studio movies as a whole. The film features a predominantly Asian cast with a trio of women at the center of the story. The titular duo, voiced by Kelly Marie Tran and Awkwafina, are tasked with saving their world from an invasion of monsters in this gorgeous, fantastical story. It received the Premiere Access treatment when it was first released three months ago, but now it’s available free for all Disney+ subscribers.
Ahead of the forthcoming Marvel Studios TV show — which is next on our list — you may want to get reacquainted with some of the noteworthy plot points and characters. Prior to each of their shows, Marvel Studios: Legends provides a short summary of what you should know before watching since the MCU is quite considerable in scope and size. The newest two episodes detail the journey of the Tesseract, which houses the Space Stone, as well as one of its most frequent users and the man who stars in his own show: Loki.
The third Marvel TV show of the year comes in June, heralding the return of the God of Mischief, Loki. From what we know about the story, Loki has got himself in trouble with the Time Variance Authority; and from what we know about Loki, he will probably lie, undermine, and weasel his way out of punishment or accountability. We’re curious about the tone and message: “WandaVision” and “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” were quite different, so we wonder where this story will fall. As a departure from the norm, a new episode drops every Wednesday.
For those seeking calming sights and sounds, you can enjoy the second season of Disney’s clever and resourceful “Zenimation” series. Pulling from their beautiful animated back catalog, the series thematically groups images and pairs it will soothing music to create a relaxing piece of content for those who want to turn off their mind.
Just in time for summer comes this new title from Disney Pixar. Set in the stunning Italian Riviera, “Luca” tells a coming-of-age story of two young friends across a season of adventures and exploration. The catch is, however, that the two friends are sea monsters who transform into fishy creatures when they get wet. We’re curious about the deeper message that may unfold over the course of the film, while Pixar’s consistent success rate makes this a can’t miss movie for the whole family.
Based on the popular book series by Trenton Lee Stewart, this eight-episode series follows a group of gifted orphans who are tasked to save the world. Tony Hale plays the peculiar Mr. Benedict as well as his evil twin brother. An early trailer promises wit, color and more than a bit of commentary on the world’s current state of affairs; it feels familiar to Netflix’s rendition of “A Series of Unfortunate Events.” Though it caters mainly to youngsters, we think some adults will be able to jump in as well.
This timely and important documentary follows the lives of three transgender high school athletes as they compete to not only succeed at their sport, but be accepted by policymakers and adults in the world. While there certainly looks to be a lot of frustrating and insidious commentary, the trailer suggests that the film champions these teens and their allies more than focusing on the hate around them. We imagine there will be more than a few tears watching this one.
This stunning French-language drama was released in 2020, earning accolades on the awards circuit and a spot on the shortlist for Best International Feature at the Oscars. It tells the story of an inmate-run prison in the Côte d’Ivoire that boasts a legacy of rites, rituals, and fantasy. What unfolds is a violent film that triumphs storytelling, both beautiful and uncomfortable in equal measure. For adults seeking something new and unfamiliar, we recommend this spellbinding tale.
This 2020 film is a high-profile Australian remake of a 2015 Icelandic story that seems to have more resonance around the world. The comedy follows a pair of feuding brothers who are both farmers in the same remote part of the country. When tragedy strikes and their livelihood and history are threatened by the government, the two must put aside their differences and work together. The result is something sweet, tender, absurd, and wildly entertaining.

There are some unique entries on the list this month, but this may be the weirdest of them all. “Willy’s Wonderland” stars Nicolas Cage who doesn’t have much to say. In fact, the conceit of this bonkers film is that Cage’s character, a loner who stumbles upon a mysterious fun center after his car breaks down, doesn’t talk at all. However, he does have to fight, as his newfound janitorial duties put him at odds with killer animatronic animals in this gory cult comedy.
While Ilana Glazer is better known for comedy, she delivers a startling horror film in her feature writing debut. This modern take on Rosemary’s Baby revolves around a young woman (Glazer) trying to get pregnant who starts to realize that her famed fertility doctor (Pierce Brosnan) has a dark side. Like “Broad City,” we’re assured that “False Positive” has a lot to say about the patriarchy along with plenty of thrills and scares.
To kick off the month, we suggest revisiting a timeless and hysterical comedy that never ceases to entertain. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are adults who become stepbrothers and finally need to leave the nest and confront the outside world. Their initial antagonism and then partnership make for many quotable lines and memorable scenes, all culminating in a tremendous conclusion at the Catalina Wine Mixer.
This popular Indian spy series found a dedicated audience and was critically acclaimed in its first season, returning this June for another ten episodes. It follows secret agent Srikant Tiwari as he works for a counterintelligence agency and tries to balance his family life, allowing for both heightened tension and a bit of tender humor. Audiences have been eagerly awaiting the second season as the first, which bowed in September 2019, ended on a cliffhanger that has viewers wondering what happens next.
Those that watched the Oscars this year — it wasn’t many — may have scratched their heads when they heard that a movie called “Pinocchio” has earned a few nominations. That’s because it got a quiet release in North American at the end of 2020 after debuting in Italy. Directed by Matteo Garrone and starring Roberto Benigni as Geppeto, this live-action story of the timeless tale mixes adventure with dark fantasy for something both familiar and engrossing.
Dark and funny, this series stars Anna Paquin as the head of a PR firm that works with high-profile clients and uncomfortable situations. The lively series has had a curious run: it moved around to a couple different networks in North America based on budgetary issues and was canceled after shooting a second season but before it aired. While those in the U.K. got to watch this second season in April of 2020, North American viewers can finally stream it this June.
One of the longer-running Amazon Original series, “Bosch” returns for its 7th and final season. It stars Titus Welliver as the titular Los Angeles homicide detective and is equal parts the familiar cop procedural that you would see on cable as well as an intimate character study more akin to premium channels and services. If you’re looking for a new show to dive into, you can take in all 70 episodes on Prime at the end of June.
