New in November 2020: The best shows and movies on Hulu, Disney+, and Amazon Prime

On Nov. 19, Disney+ will be a year old with an ever-growing catalog of content and lots of success as a premier streaming service. This coming month features another balanced slate of documentaries and fictional content, TV shows, and movies for viewers of all ages and interests.

Disney’s companion service, Hulu, also has a lengthy roster of content coming out in November. Not to be outdone, Amazon Prime will also offer an impressive slate. It’s a terrific time to stay home and enjoy some comforting, thrilling, or innovative content.

Here’s what we’re looking forward to streaming in November.

Best November 2020 Disney+ releases

The Mandalorian, Oct. 30

While “The Mandalorian” does in fact debut its second season on Oct. 30, it’s worth including on the list for November as the bulk of the season will play out this month. One episode will drop every Friday, and following the well-received first season and rumors about what’s to come, this is a series you should watch the day the episodes air. The adventures of Mando and the Child (Baby Yoda) look to be bigger and more thrilling than before. The question is: Who will they encounter along the way?

Disney’s A Christmas Carol, Nov. 6

Get into the festive spirit with the computer-animated version of “A Christmas Carol,” starring Jim Carrey in the role of Ebenezer Scrooge. Backed by impressive performances all around, including several by Carrey himself, Disney’s “A Christmas Carol” will help you get ready for the holidays. It also features some stunning visuals and exciting sequences, making this a captivating story for young and old alike.

Inside Pixar, Nov. 13

Disney continues churning out behind-the-scenes content every month, and it continues to be fascinating. In November, Disney+ is offering viewers a look at the workings of Pixar —  the award-winning, heralded studio behind terrific movies like “Toy Story,” “Wall-E,” and “Up.” We don’t have too many details about this docu-series, but knowing Disney, it’s likely to tease the upcoming Pixar film “Soul,” which will debut on the streaming service on Christmas Day.

LEGO Star Wars Holiday Special, Nov. 17

The first Star Wars Life Day special is, well, infamous. It’s odd, bizarre, and generally unwatchable — and in fact hard to find and watch. It’s fitting that Disney is going to embrace the absurdist nature of that decades-old special by teaming up with LEGO to create an animated holiday special starring the heroes of the resistance along with lots of familiar faces. The LEGO feature looks to work with not only a holiday special format, but also a series that — at least on the big screen — seems to take itself too seriously.

The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse, Nov. 18

The famed, flagship character of Disney returns along with his friends for a new series of animated shorts. Mickey, along with Minnie, Goofy, Donald, Daisy, and Pluto, will feature in new stories for nostalgic fans and newcomers alike. This mid-week release date is no accident either. Nov.18 is in fact Mickey’s birthday, as it was 92 years ago that he first took to the screen. The first two shorts will debut together, with additional episodes coming online every Friday.

Marvel’s 616, Nov. 20

Another documentary chronicling the creation of a beloved Disney property, “Marvel 616” is a docu-series following the rise and success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and how it connected with fans around the world. Eight stories, each told by a different filmmaker, will detail how Marvel Comics has grown and expanded, as well as the popularity it’s achieved with new audiences. As for the title: 616 is the name of the Earth in which most of Marvel Comics’s stories exist.

Black Beauty, Nov. 27

The Disney remake of this classic story rounds out the month’s exciting offerings. “Black Beauty” tells the heartwarming tale of the bond between a young girl and a free-born horse. Kate Winslet will voice the mustang, while Claire Foy, who starred in the popular Disney film “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” will play Jo Green. This coming-of-age drama is sure to capture the imagination of young viewers everywhere.

Best November 2020 Hulu releases

James Bond, Nov. 1

It’s been several years since a new entry into the long-running James Bond cinematic series, and it’s going to be a while more as “No Time to Die” now eyes an April 2021 release. Still, there are plenty of films to hold you over until then, as Hulu will be adding a slew of films to their service. You can enjoy some earlier adventures featuring Sean Connery, like “Diamonds are Forever” and “You Only Live Twice.”

If you want something more lighthearted, check out Roger’s Moore turn in “Moonraker” and “A View to a Kill.” If you're missing Daniel Craig’s style of films, we recommend turning to an oft-overlooked Bond entry: “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service,” starring one-and-done George Lazenby.

I Am Greta, Nov. 13

This stirring documentary follows climate change crusader Greta Thunberg as she rallies a call for action to save the planet. Filmmakers follow the Swedish activist for two years as she lobbies the United Nations, as well as the rest of the world, to take action against an imposing threat. The story also chronicles her voyage across the Atlantic on a wind-powered boat, among other important moments in her life thus far.

Animaniacs, Nov. 20

There are legions of passionate fans who are quite excited to welcome back the antics of Yakko, Wakko, and Dot. For those who didn't get swept up in the chaotic, clever tales of “The Animaniacs,” the animated musical comedy ran for five seasons in the 90s and delivered a lot of catchy tunes, memorable characters, and unforgettable lines. A new trailer highlights their coming escapades, including references to a range of pop culture highlights of the last 20 years. It’s definitely a welcome time for something so zany and exuberant.

Run, Nov. 20

For those interested in a tense thriller, be sure to check out the new film “Run,” premiering on Nov. 20. Directed by Aneesh Chaganty, this film stars Sarah Paulson as a mother who has raised her daughter in isolation. As her daughter grows up, she comes to realize her upbringing was not normal or healthy, and she learns her mother is harboring some dangerous secrets. We’re especially excited at watching Paulson taking on more sinister roles, particularly after her characters in “American Horror Story” and “Ratched.”

Black Narcissus, Nov. 24

The entirety of this three-episode limited series will make its way to Hulu towards the end of the month for what looks to be a chilling tale of faith and history. Set during the British rule of India, the series stars Gemma Arterton as an aspiring nun who takes to the Himalayas on a mission to absolve sins of the past — though new temptations await. The late Diana Rigg also features in this psychological drama that is definitely for adults only.

Best November 2020 Amazon Prime releases

The Expendables, Nov. 1

For those who want to forgo some peace and quiet for a bit of mindless action, you can enjoy the entirety of “The Expendables” trilogy on Prime come Nov. 1. Starring Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, and feature roles or cameos from pretty much every big name in action from the last 40 years, “The Expendables” is simple and entertaining. There’s a high body count, cheesy dialogue, and major set pieces throughout — the third entry also features a handful of aspiring action stars who have a little more spring in their step than some of the sexagenarians in the series.

Community, Nov. 8

A cult-comedy favorite of nerds, outcasts, and pop-culture lovers, all six seasons of “Community” are coming to Prime. This loveable, clever comedy follows the antics of a study group at a community college, starring Joel McHale, Donald Glover, and Alison Brie. Under all the absurdity and chaos is a show about friendship, acceptance, and inclusivity. It also features loving homages to a slew of film and TV tropes, like zombie flicks, space race movies, old westerns, and one of our favorites: the bottle episode.

James May: Oh Cook, Nov. 13

This Prime Original series looks to delight the aspiring culinary connoisseurs. TV personality James May, who has found success encouraging those who don’t know how to cook with simple, fail-proof recipes, stars in this series where he and the viewer will learn some new dishes and create delicious yet easy meals. Across the seven episodes, there’s a good chance novice cooks and hopeful chefs out there will learn a trick or two and have a laugh.

Small Axe, Nov. 20

This British-American anthology series is directed and co-written by acclaimed storyteller Steve McQueen, weaving tales set in London’s West Indian community from the 1960s to 1980s. It stars John Boyega and Letitia Wright, among others, and like many other stories from McQueen, looks to be tense, honest, and captivating. Across five films, “Small Axe” will tackle love and hate, discrimination and segregation, and hope and despair.

The Pack, Nov. 20

For something more lighthearted, we encourage you and any of your furry friends to curl up and watch “The Pack.” This reality competition series pairs pet-owners with their dogs, traveling around the world to overcome obstacles and win challenges, testing the bond between human and canine. Lindsay Vonn (and her dog) host the series, which finds 12 teams competing for a prize of $500,000 — half of which will be donated to an animal charity.

Uncle Frank, November 25

There are surely many of us who would enjoy a road trip right now, but the next-best thing might be a new road trip movie. “Uncle Frank” is set in the 1970s and follows the titular character (played by Paul Bettany) and his 18-year-old niece on a trip from Manhattan to South Carolina. A heartwarming and humorous journey ensues, particularly after Frank’s partner joins along, ready to meet a family that doesn’t seem too ready to accept Frank’s lifestyle. With an impressive cast including Steven Root, Judy Greer, and rising star Sophia Lillis, “Uncle Frank” looks like a stirring, can’t-miss story.
