Target’s new ‘Denim Take Back’ event: Turn in used jeans for a discount on new ones

If you're anything like me, you probably have a drawer full of old, worn out jeans you hardly wear anymore because they're frayed at the hems and they have holes in the knees (or thighs, #IYKYK). They aren't in good enough shape to donate, but you feel terrible tossing them in the trash, knowing they'll just rot in a landfill. So what do you do? Well, Target is saving the world, as usual. The brand just announced a new program to recycle customers' old denim — and if you turn in your old jeans, you can even score a 20% discount on some new ones.

"Our new Denim Take Back Event is an easy way for families to give their used denim a new life," said Gena Fox,Target senior vice president of merchandising for apparel and accessories. "With back-to-school and college shopping top of mind for families, we're offering this 20% off Target Circle deal to make it even more affordable for our guests to refresh their denim wardrobes, while also doing our part to reduce waste and keep used denim out of landfills."

The Target Denim Take Back event is modeled after the store's extremely successful car seat trade-in program, which has helped parents recycle 2.6 million car seats since 2016. Not only does it help reduce waste, it also responds to shoppers' growing interest in sustainable products — something we can all get behind.

How Target's Denim Take Back event works

Target's Denim Take Back event will be from Aug. 4-10 at all Target stores chain-wide. If you recycle up to five denim items (of any brand), you can get a 20% discount on a new denim apparel purchase with Target Circle. Here's what to do:

1. Bring up to five denim items, in any condition from any brand, to a Target store and drop them in the marked, in-store boxes.
2. Receive a Target Circle promo code for 20% off all denim apparel. You can use the discount on Target-owned or national brands.
3. Redeem your discount code from Aug. 4-10.
