These Duplo toys teach toddlers how to express their feelings

Duplo makes little toys with big feelings

You might think of LEGO Duplo sets as great for developing kids' fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination, but the Big Emotions line encourages social and emotional learning, too. These sets feature buildable characters with expressive faces showing feelings and emotions, such as sadness, surprise and happiness. These can help kids to identify and learn about feelings, as well as giving caregivers a jumping off point into discussing feelings.

There are two sets that we love. The Duplo Buildable People with Big Emotions set for kids 3 and up contains 71 pieces they can build five characters with. There are various ways to put them together, including using wheels for feet. With 10 face bricks for the five characters, kids can explore and name different emotions.

The Duplo My First Big Feelings & Emotions set is aimed at younger kids of 18 months and over. The bricks are larger and easier to assemble and there are just 21 pieces in total, so it's less challenging for little ones. The four characters can each display two emotions, giving children more opportunities to explore their feelings.

Frank discussion about how feelings affect us and how to verbalize them can be a turning point for kids, helping their emotional development. Of course, no toy is going to do all the work, but seeing a range of emotions on these characters' faces and talking about what that means is a great place to start. Right now, you can pick up the LEGO Duplo My First Big Feelings & Emotions Interactive Toy for $24 and the LEGO Duplo Town Buildable People with Big Emotions Interactive Toy for $40 at Target.

Other Duplo toys that we love

LEGO Duplo My First Number Train Toy

Kids of 18 months and over can learn numbers with this Duplo set. The 23-piece set contains everything little ones need to build a train that can carry the numbers one to nine. There's also a zero included that can be paired with the one to help teach numbers one to 10.

LEGO Duplo Town Fire Engine Toy

This 21-piece fire engine set is designed for children aged 2 and up. It also comes with a buildable tree and cat and firefighter figures so kids can act out that classic yarn.

LEGO Duplo Classic Brick Box Building Set

Some kids prefer to build whatever they like, rather than following instructions — in which case, this brick box is ideal. It contains 65 bricks for little ones to make anything that springs into their imagination. Kids also get two figures and a Duplo car, giving more opportunities for play.

LEGO Duplo Town Caring for Animals at the Farm Toy

Little animal lovers will adore this playset. It features 75 pieces for kids to assemble farm buildings, plus it comes with animal figures, including cows, horses and sheep, along with a couple of farmers to take care of them.

LEGO Duplo 3-in-1 Tree House Building Toy

With 126 pieces, this set is larger than some and more complex to assemble, which is why it's recommended for kids aged 3 and over. Once built, this tree house is fun to play with, featuring a slide, a winch and other entertaining features.
