How to fly with a dog

Flying with your dog

As if air travel wasn’t stressful enough these days, bringing along your dog can make the experience even more difficult, but it doesn't have to be if you plan ahead and have the right equipment.

First, make sure your dog is healthy enough to fly and that you’ve made all the proper arrangements with the airline. Different airlines have different policies when it comes to traveling with your dog, but there are some basic guidelines to follow and products that can help make your trip much more comfortable for you and your pet.

What to consider before flying with your dog

The cost of flying with your dog

On most airlines, it costs roughly $125 each way to fly with your dog on domestic flights, and there’s often a limit of one dog per passenger. Additional costs may apply for larger dogs.

Cargo vs. carry-on

The general rule of thumb is that if your dog is small enough to fit in a carrier that fits under the seat in front of you, they can ride with you in the cabin. Larger dogs will most likely have to travel in the cargo hold.

Don’t forget the essentials

It’s important to pack everything you’ll need in the event of any unexpected delays. Dog treats, a leash, a collar, a harness and poop bags should be with you at all times.
