For any man who’s tired of using a standard razor and shaving cream every morning, an electric razor is an ideal alternative. That’s because it’s a quick, mess-free option for removing facial hair and perfect for travel or shaving on the go. If you want a high-quality electric razor, it’s hard to top those from Remington, one of the most trusted brands in the field.
A Remington electric razor is an excellent option for anyone who wants to get an irritation-free shave nearly anywhere without the need for water or lather. You can also remove facial hair more quickly without worrying about getting any nicks or cuts like you can with a straight razor.
But with so many Remington electric razors on the market, choosing the best one for your shaving routine can be tricky. If you’re overwhelmed by the many options, our convenient shopping guide has all the tips you need to choose the ideal model for you. Ready to buy? Check out our top Remington electric razor picks.
Foil vs. rotary
Remington offers two main types of electric razor: foil and rotary.
Foil electric razors use oscillating blades beneath a steel mesh (foil) to cut facial hair. The blades move back and forth at high speed to cut the hair that protrudes through the small perforations in the foil. A foil electric razor gives a close shave and works well on a variety of hair types. It also allows you to shave more quickly, and its straight edge makes trimming your mustache and sideburns much easier. Foil razors are usually easier to clean and maintain, too.
But foil electric razors aren’t without some issues. They’re fairly noisy when in use and aren’t suitable for shaving in a circular motion. A foil razor also doesn’t work well for longer hair and may irritate your skin if you use too much pressure when moving it across your face.
Rotary electric razors have a round head with three circular blade disks that spin to trim facial hair. Because of the rounded shape, a rotary electric razor can hug the contours of your face more closely than a foil razor can. The design also works especially well for long or coarse hair. And it doesn’t make as much noise as a foil razor.
However, a rotary electric razor doesn’t provide as close a shave as a foil electric razor. It can be more difficult to clean, too. Some people find it to be the most difficult type of electric razor to get used to.
Corded/cordless
All Remington electric razors have rechargeable batteries that allow you to use the razor as a cordless device. To charge the battery, you must plug the razor into an outlet or fit it into a charging base that’s plugged into an outlet. With most models, you can’t use the razor while the battery is charging. However, some Remington electric razors can be used in a corded capacity while the battery is charging. If you never want to be caught without a functional razor, opt for a model that is corded/cordless so you don’t have to wait for the battery to charge in order to shave.
Wet/dry
While most electric razors are designed to be used for dry shaving, some Remington models allow for both wet and dry shaving. If you want to be able to use your razor in the shower or with shaving cream or gel, opt for a Remington wet/dry electric razor that’s fully waterproof.
Grip
It might seem like a minor point, but you want to choose an electric razor with a comfortable grip that feels good in your hand. Remington razors are all designed to provide an outstanding grip, but some models have an ergonomic handle to better fit the contours of your hand. You can also find models with a rubberized grip, so you don’t have to worry about the razor slipping in your hand while you’re shaving.
Trimmer
While all Remington electric razors will do the job if you prefer a clean-shaven look, you’ll need a model that includes a trimmer if you’re maintaining a beard, mustache, or sideburns. Some Remington electric razors have a built-in pop-up trimmer for added convenience. Others include a trimmer attachment that you add when it’s time to trim longer hair.
LED indicator
More advanced Remington electric razors have an LED indicator to alert you to the status of the battery. Some models simply have an LED light that lets you know the razor requires charging, while others show the battery level, so you always know exactly how much power your razor has left.
Shave time
For the most convenient shaving, you should choose an electric razor that offers a generous amount of run time on a full battery charge. All Remington electric razors offer at least 45 minutes of shave time, which is sufficient for most men’s shaving needs. Some models offer up to an hour of shave time on a single battery charge, so you might be able to use it for a couple of weeks before having to recharge it.
Automatic shutoff
Overcharging an electric razor can weaken the battery over time. Some Remington electric razors have an automatic shutoff that cuts power to the charger as soon as the battery is fully charged. Other models require you to unplug the charger when you notice the battery is full in order to prolong the battery life.
Quick charge
Remington electric razors can take from a few to 16 hours to fully charge. Some higher-end Remington electric razors have a quick-charge feature that can provide five or so minutes of charge, enough power to get through a single shave. You can also opt for a model that allows for corded shaving to make sure you’re never caught without a razor.
Remington electric razors vary in price based on the type and features they offer. In general, you’ll pay between $18 and $150.
Inexpensive
Travel electric razors are the most affordable option, generally ranging from $18 to $25. These compact models don’t offer many features and tend to have shorter shave times.
Mid-range
Effective basic Remington electric razors generally range from $30 to $75. These include both foil and rotary models that may include features like a wet/dry option and built-in trimmer.
Expensive
For a top-of-the-line Remington electric razor, you’ll spend between $75 to $150. These include both foil and rotary models and provide a wide range of features, including a wet/dry option, built-in trimmer, LED indicator, and quick-charge feature.
If you’re new to using an electric razor, it can take some time to get used to it. Give yourself at least a few weeks to learn the new techniques and for your skin to get over any irritation.
Unless you purchase a Remington electric razor with a wet/dry shaving option, make sure your face is completely dry and free of lotions, creams, and other products before shaving.
If you’re using a foil razor, move it back and forth across your skin. If you’re using a rotary razor, move it across your skin in a circular motion.
An electric razor can get fairly hot while in use. Be careful not to let the outer housing come into contact with your skin near the end of your shave.
It’s extremely important to keep your electric razor clean. Follow the instructions for cleaning provided in the owner’s manual.
Remington makes a wide variety of electric shavers, so there is bound to be an option that fits your shaving preferences. We love the Remington SmartEdge Advanced Foil Shaver, which offers the option of shaving wet or dry and has a lithium battery that can run for 50 minutes on a single charge. If you travel regularly, the Remington TF70CDN Foil Travel Shaver is an ideal option because it runs on easy-to-find AA batteries, has a secure switch to prevent it from turning on and draining the batteries in transit, and includes a built-in cleaning brush to keep the foils clean.
Q. What type of Remington electric razor is best for beginners?
A. If you’re new to shaving with an electric razor, a Remington foil razor is usually easier to learn how to use. While it’s a little more difficult to shave beneath your nose, you don’t need to use much pressure with a foil electric razor, and you only need to move it in a simple back and forth motion. It’s also easier to clean than a rotary model.
Q. How often should I replace the blades on a Remington electric razor?
A. You should always consult the owner’s manual for your particular model because some razors require more frequent blade replacement than others. In general, it’s usually recommended that you replace the blades at least once a year. You might want to do it more often if you have particularly thick or coarse hair.
Q. Do Remington electric razors offer warranty protection?
A. Most Remington electric razors include a two-year limited warranty, but some of the inexpensive travel models only have a year of warranty protection. Keep in mind that the warranty usually only covers defects due to faulty materials or workmanship, not issues that arise from accidents or misuse.
