A puck is the humble disc that causes so much angst in ice hockey. Regulation size ice hockey pucks are 1 inch thick, 3 inches in diameter, and weigh 6 oz. There are heavier practice pucks, which allow drilling to improve strength and hitting skills, as well as lightweight ones for beginners and kids. Pucks are made from vulcanized rubber, which means it has undergone a chemical process which hardens it to be able to take the thrashing it gets on the ice. They are uniformly black, but may come embossed with team logos. Interesting note: Pucks are frozen before a game to reduce bouncing during play.
