Have you ever had a really good cup of coffee? Forget the overpriced stuff you buy in the shop down the street or the proliferation of pods that litter the landscape. We’re talking about really good coffee. If you can answer yes, the chances are good that it was brewed in a Technivorm Moccamaster. Founded in the Netherlands in 1964, Technivorm has been the gold standard of coffee makers for decades. Billed as the coffee maker “that will last your lifetime,” one of these machines is the perfect addition to the office or home of any coffee aficionado.
Technivorm manufactures a number of different kinds of coffee makers, and while they have several quality features in common, there are some differences. This guide introduces you to some of these features, what you can expect to pay, and some of our favorites.
All Technivorm coffee machines feature a rust-resistant metal housing, and all the plastics used in their production are free of BPA, BPS, BPF, and phthalates. Depending on the model you choose, your coffee maker will have either a glass or thermal (metal) carafe.
All of the Technivorm Moccamasters are pretty speedy when it comes to brew time. Standard is a copper heating element that’s capable of heating water quickly and consistently. Brew times are from four to eight minutes, depending on the machine’s capacity. Those capable of brewing larger amounts of coffee at a time take longer to brew.
On/off: You don’t need a degree in engineering to run a Technivorm Moccamaster. The only control you’ll find on most of these machines is an on/off switch. You won’t find a clock, timer, or any of a number of other buttons and knobs you might be used to seeing on coffee makers.
Hot plate: Some models have individual controls for the hot plate, so you can choose to keep your coffee at a specific temperature.
Are you buying a machine for your office or large family or is it just for one or two coffee drinkers? You can save some brewing time (and money) by purchasing a machine that correlates with how much you plan to use it. If you entertain frequently, a larger-capacity machine may suit you better. If you have limited counter space, you may prefer a machine with a smaller capacity and more compact footprint.
The color choices vary considerably from machine to machine. Most Technivorm Moccamasters offer one or two color choices, but a few offer over a dozen color options. If you’re searching for a coffee machine to match your kitchen, consider one of these (in particular, the Moccamaster KBG offers 17 color options covering everything from pistachio to copper to black).
The one area where you have some control is the brew basket. While some Technivorm brew baskets are automatic (no options), others have a switch that allows you to open or close the brew basket completely or close it partially. This gives you the ability to control the coffee steeping process, which can greatly affect the taste of your brew.
Also available on some models is a hot plate that automatically shuts off after 100 minutes.
If you’re on a tight budget, you may not be considering one of these coffee makers. Technivorm Moccamasters range in price from just under $300 to more than $350, depending on the model. The difference in price from one to the next is largely a matter of capacity: you will spend more for a 15-cup machine than you will for a 10-cup machine. While these coffee makers are pricey, you might decide it’s worth it for high-quality brewed coffee and an appliance that will last a very long time.
Use a medium drip grind. To achieve the highest-quality brew, Technivorm recommends using a medium grind in its coffee makers. The grounds should be uniform in size.
Use water that’s room temperature or cool. Technivorm says its machines work better with cooler water.
Don’t touch the pipe leading from the coffee maker housing to the brew basket. It becomes quite hot during the brew cycle.
Close the brew basket to improve your brew. If you have a brew basket with manual settings, closing it offers one of the best options you have for improving your coffee. Start the brew cycle with the brew basket closed. Let the basket fill to the halfway mark with water, then gently stir the grounds until they’re evenly wet. Open the brew basket and let the machine finish the brew cycle.
Don’t close the brew basket to pause brewing. Since the brew cycle is so short, Technivorm recommends letting it finish before you pour a cup.
Don’t use vinegar to remove scale from your Moccamaster. It isn’t recommended for use in coffee machines for a number of reasons: it doesn’t remove enough scale, it leaves an aftertaste that affects the coffee, and it can hasten the breakdown of machine gaskets and O-rings.
Clean your Moccamaster by hand. The washable parts of Technivorm machines are not dishwasher safe. It’s recommended that you wash all parts by hand.
A. That’s largely up to you. Thermal carafes keep coffee hot longer and are ideal for people who like to savor their coffee slowly. But the metal carafe is heavier, and you can’t tell at a glance how much coffee is left in it. Also, some people feel that a thermal carafe imparts more of an aftertaste to coffee than glass does. Glass is lighter, and you can easily tell how much coffee remains, but it’s easier to break.
A. The company recommends against using permanent filters in their coffee makers because the filters can easily become clogged over time, causing the machine to overflow. Their filter of choice is a simple paper filter.
A. One lid is used for brewing while the second is used to either keep your brew warm for a longer period of time or as a spill-proof travel lid.
A. All coffee makers suffer from a buildup of calcium deposits known as scale. Over time, this buildup can affect the performance of the machine, so it’s advisable that you periodically remove it with a descaling solution. Technivorm recommends descaling its coffee makers after every 100 brew cycles to keep the machines running efficiently and brewing great-tasting coffee.
