Cuzen

Matcha Maker Starter Kit

Bottom Line

Due to its visual appeal, ease of use, and contents, our tester recommends this comprehensive set for beginners.

Pros

This one was designed with beginners in mind, and while it may take a few brews to learn, it's an ideal way to learn the art of matcha. The included matcha tea is delicious on its own or in a latte. Our tester also noted how easy it is to clean, too.

Cons

This one's expensive. Our tester also recommends double-checking the finicky grinding chamber before you use it.

About the product

Cuzen Matcha Machine Single Product Review

Is the Cuzen Matcha Machine worth it?

While there are tens of thousands of coffee shops in the United States alone, an increasing percentage of the population prefers to make their morning caffeinated beverage at home, whether it’s coffee, hot tea or matcha. With a plethora of user-friendly espresso machines and cold brew makers, enjoying a homemade cup of coffee is effortless. Fresh matcha, on the other hand, typically involves a small arm workout to achieve the perfect whisk.

The Cuzen Matcha Maker Starter Kit, designed to store and grind high-quality matcha leaves, could be the answer for matcha tea lovers who want to forego expensive coffee shops. Cuzen claims its Matcha Machine “ensures you’re getting the best available matcha.”

So, if you’re looking for a simple way to make your favorite matcha beverage at home while saving money, you might want to consider the Cuzen Matcha Machine.

Testing the Cuzen Matcha Machine

The BestReviews Testing Lab analyzed the Cuzen Matcha Machine to determine if it lives up to its claims and who would benefit from this appliance. They evaluated each setting and tested the included matcha leaf blends.

What is the Cuzen Matcha Machine?

If you’re unfamiliar with matcha, it’s a tea leaf that gets ground up and whisked with water. Unlike other teas, you ingest the entire leaf, which is known for its many health benefits. When compared to coffee, many prefer to receive their caffeine from matcha since it sustains a longer energy boost without the jitters or crash that often accompanies coffee. This is due to a calming agent called L-theanine.

Similar to a Keurig for coffee, the Cuzen Matcha Maker is an automated machine that stores, grinds and whisks organic matcha leaves to produce high-quality, fresh matcha tea that can be used to make a variety of beverages. Instead of using a pre-ground matcha powder, which is most commonly used in home kitchens, this machine takes the highest-quality organic matcha leaves and grinds them into a fine powder. In addition to keeping their vibrant color longer, Cuzen claims its whole leaves are also higher in antioxidants than pre-ground powder.

How to use the Cuzen Matcha Machine

With secure boxing and a polished design, the packaging was impressive. Every piece of the packaging has a designated cutout, and the welcome packet feels inviting and minimalistic. After taking it out of the box, the Cuzen Matcha Machine looks modern and is an appliance you wouldn’t mind displaying on your countertop. The machine is comprised of a cylindrical pipe down the middle that houses the ceramic mill. The package also comes with a magnetic whisking cup and three sample matcha leaf packets. The setup is intuitive and simple, requiring you to lock the whisk into the cup and plug in the cord.

To make a cup of matcha, pour your preferred matcha leaf blend into the hopper. The included sample packets are 4 grams, but the hopper holds a full-size 20-gram package of Cuzen matcha leaves. Depending on how many leaves you add and how often you make a cup, you shouldn’t have to refill the hopper very often. Next, put water in the whisking cup up to the clearly marked fill line, equal to 2 ounces, and slide the cup onto the platform. It's magnetic, so you should feel it lock into place. Before starting the machine, you’ll need to choose your matcha strength. The machine features three LED lights that illuminate for one shot, one-and-a-half shots or two shots. One shot is equivalent to 1 gram of matcha. Then, press start.

During the next two to four minutes, depending on the strength setting, the machine will simultaneously whisk the water as the mill grinds the leaves into a fine powder, and drop it into the cup. The machine will quietly beep when the process is done, so there’s no need to stand and wait. You can drink your shot as is or refer to the included booklet for other beverages.

Cuzen Matcha Machine benefits

From the setup to performance, every aspect of the Cuzen Matcha Machine is effortless. It looks elegant and minimalistic and is a great conversation starter when others see it sitting on your countertop. Regardless of the strength, the matcha flavor is strong, so you don’t have to worry about getting watery matcha, ever. The taste is comparable to a drink you would order at top coffee shops made by experienced baristas. Plus, cleaning the machine is straightforward and isn’t required very often.

If you’re looking for a way to cut back on costs from visiting your local coffee shop, the Cuzen machine and leaves offer significant savings, coming out to a little over $1 per shot.

Cuzen Matcha Machine drawbacks

While the taste was bold, there was a slightly grainy texture that didn’t get whisked thoroughly. You don’t usually get a texture using pre-ground powder and a whisk, but with the Cuzen you also receive higher-quality whole leaves. That said, the texture didn’t take away from the flavor.

If you have a favorite matcha blend, you’ll have to switch to use this machine, as it’s explicitly calibrated for Cuzen’s whole matcha leaves. Unfortunately, you also can’t use it with pre-ground powder or other types of tea leaves. Since they only have a few blends, it’s definitely one of the drawbacks of this matcha maker.

Should you get the Cuzen Matcha Machine?

Overall, the Cuzen Matcha Starter Kit is a quality machine that produces a tasty brew. It’s entirely automated, so you can set it and forget it while preparing for the day or doing other household tasks. However, the Cuzen Matcha Machine is an investment, so it may not be worth it to occasional matcha drinkers. But, if you’re a matcha connoisseur or someone who buys a matcha beverage several times a week, you should consider the Cuzen Matcha Machine.
