About the product

Chop, dice and prep large amounts of food without a knife

Chopping, dicing, slicing and other forms of food ingredient preparation are labor-intensive and tedious activities even for experienced cooks, especially when large amounts are needed. Knife skills are vital to food preparation, but some individuals lack the dexterity or confidence to use chef’s knives

Food choppers such as the Fullstar Vegetable Chopper help the home cook reduce the amount of manual labor involved in food prep and are safer to use for those who might have difficulties using knives.

Testing the Fullstar Vegetable Chopper

The BestReviews Testing Lab strives to investigate every claim the brand/manufacturer makes about the product. For this article, the testing lab judged the Fullstar Vegetable Chopper on setup, ease of use, effectiveness of blades, ergonomics and cleaning, among other features.

What is the Fullstar Vegetable Chopper?

The Fullstar Vegetable Chopper is a large-capacity manual food chopper with a hinged lever top, detachable cutting blade inserts and 5-cup collection bin. It comes with four interchangeable blades: fine dice, medium dice, ribbon and spiralizer. The blades are 420 food-grade stainless steel, while the rest of the chopper and inserts are of rigid and durable BPA-free ABS plastic. The chopper also comes with a cleaning brush, two dicer blade scrapers and a finger guard.

Fullstar Vegetable Chopper price and where to buy

The Fullstar Vegetable Chopper has a list price of $39.99. It's available in white, black or gray on Amazon and Walmart, often at a small discount.

How to use the Fullstar Vegetable Chopper

The Fullstar Vegetable Chopper comes ready to use, although a preliminary washing is recommended, as with all new cooking equipment. The chop lid is raised to reveal the platform and the cutting blade insert. A piece of food, such as a half onion, thick slice of potato or whole carrot is placed directly on the blade insert. When the chop lid is firmly lowered, the food item is forced through the grid of the cutting blade and into the collection tray beneath. Switching blades is simple and requires only a slide lock. The spiralizer and ribbon cutter inserts fit into the same opening as the other cutting blades but are used by manually rotating the desired food item, such as a zucchini, through the attachment’s blades.

Fullstar Vegetable Chopper benefits

Multiple blades

Having four distinct blades impressed during the Fullstar chopper’s testing process. The most useful blade proved to be the medium dicer. Food including hard and firm fruits and vegetables such as potatoes, carrots and apples or dense foods like cheese are cut easily with this blade, and it doesn't bruise soft foods like tomatoes badly.

Dishwasher-safe

The Fullstar Vegetable Chopper is dishwasher-safe. All its components, including its cutting blades, collection tray and lever press can be cleaned on the top rack of a standard dishwasher. The bottom rack is not recommended, as the high heat may damage the ABS plastic.

Large capacity

The 5-cup (1.2-liter) capacity of the Fullstar Vegetable Chopper’s collection tray holds a plentiful amount of diced food. It holds enough for making soups, salads, salsas, stews and sauces that require plenty of diced vegetables, fruits, nuts or cheeses.

Comfortable chop lid

The Fullstar Vegetable Chopper’s chop lid has a soft rubberized handle made of TPU. This rubber handle made using the chop lid more comfortable during testing.

Stable base

The collection tray of the Fullstar Vegetable Chopper features curved rubberized feet. These feet stabilize the chopper during use. The chopper did not slip at all during testing.

Fullstar Vegetable Chopper drawbacks

Fine dicer blade difficulties

The fine dicer blade insert was more difficult to clean than expected, given the product claims. Small pieces of diced food remained stuck between the blades of the small dice insert. Using the included cleaning brush proved disappointing, since the sharp blades would often cut the brush bristles, leaving bristle residue.

May require more force

On occasion, more force than a single hand was required to press food through the cutting blades. Two hands may be needed when chopping tough vegetables such as carrots or butternut squash.

Limited shapes

Compared to other food choppers, the Fullstar Vegetable Chopper can only dice, ribbon and spiralize. It does not slice flat like a mandoline or julienne finer than the blade inserts’ grids allow.

Extremely sharp, but not able to be sharpened

The cutting blades are extremely sharp. Care should be taken when placing and removing the blade inserts from the dishwasher, as a stray finger may easily be cut. However, the design of the blades is such that sharpening them once they get dull is unlikely, shortening the overall life of the product.
