Chinchillas are active little critters and require plenty of exercise. While it’s important for chinchillas to spend adequate time outside of their cages, most pet parents simply can’t be on call 24/7. Chinchilla wheels are an excellent in-cage solution, providing a safe and stimulating outlet for pent up energy. Larger than many other small animals, chinchillas need extra room to run comfortably. Most experts agree that a 15” diameter is best, but smaller or younger chinchillas often do just fine on 12” wheels. Because they have such delicate feet, a solid running surface without gaps is essential. Chinchillas are also sensitive to heat and an open-sided wheel can help them stay cool. If you keep your chinchilla in or near your bedroom, a wheel with ball bearings can minimize night time disturbances.
