When you think about the best smart TVs, the brands that come to mind first are probably heavy hitters in the electronics industry, such as Samsung, Sony and LG. They make excellent TVs, but they’re also expensive and out of the budget range for many, especially those who want something simple yet solid for casual viewing.
TCL isn’t as recognizable as those brands, but they make some of the best budget-friendly TVs around, offering impressive picture and sound quality. Unless you want a comprehensive home theater setup, they’re perfect for everyday viewing. They’re also equipped with many premium features that can enhance your viewing experience and are some of the best TVs for hardcore gaming.
Our top pick is the versatile TCL 65-inch Class Q6-Series 4K UHD HDR QLED Smart Google TV. It features a stunning 4K display, an easy-to-use Google TV interface and — just for gamers — a gaming mode that reduces input lag, so you never miss a second of the action.

Audio Technology: Dolby Atmos; DTS Virtual:X | Display Size: 65” | Connectivity: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 5, Apple AirPlay 2 | HDR Support: HDR Pro+ with Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG | Resolution: 4K
The TCL Q6-Series is the best TCL smart TV and the closest thing to the high-end TVs offered by top-tier electronics brands. The image quality is impressive, and it comes preloaded with several picture modes you can toggle between based on what you’re watching. It also supports multiple HDR technologies for enhancing picture contrast and detail, and Dolby Atmos Sound provides an immersive experience.
The Google TV interface is user-friendly and allows you to customize your home screen with your favorite apps. You can sign in with your Google account to streamline your purchases and content in your queue and manage other smart devices on your network. You can also hook up your wireless headphones via Bluetooth for private listening, and the AIPQ processor automatically optimizes color, contrast and clarity.
The impressive 4K display alone makes this TV worth it, and QLED technology means you’ll get lifelike details and rich colors. It’s also an excellent TV for hardcore gamers, as it has an Auto Game Mode that reduces input lag. In short, we think this TV not only looks fantastic but it’s also packed with premium features that will deliver a superb viewing experience.
Best Value
Audio Technology: Dolby Atmos, DTS Virtual: X | Display Size: 50” | Connectivity: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 5, Apple AirPlay 2 | HDR Support: HDR Pro+ with Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG | Resolution: 4K
The S5-Series is similar to the Q6-Series in many ways, but the primary distinction is that this TV doesn’t have Quantum LED technology. That means colors and contrast take a bit of a dip when compared to Q6 TVs, but this TV has a significantly lower cost, and we think the picture quality is still terrific.
The AIPQ processor automatically enhances the picture quality, and Motion 240 combines multiple motion-enhancement technologies for the best clarity. It supports various HDR technologies, including HDR Pro+ with Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10 and HLG, and advanced audio post-processing for an immersive sound experience. The backlit remote is excellent for nighttime use and features a dedicated Google Assistant button for searching for content and executing other commands.
If you don’t care about QLE technology but still want a high-end TV, this S5-Series presents the best value. It looks nearly as good as the Q6-Series TVs and offers comparable performance, functionality and features.
Affordable and Reliable
Audio Technology: Dolby Digital | Display Size: 50” | Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Apple AirPlay 2 | HDR Support: HDR 10 | Resolution: 4K
The TCL Class 4-Series TVs are older than the other models on our list of favorite TCL smart TVs, but they still have plenty to offer, and you’ll get plenty of bang for your buck. This 50-inch TV is excellent for basements, family rooms and oversized bedrooms, and the 4K resolution makes it perfect for streaming newer content.
It doesn’t have all the HDR options that you’ll get with one of the latest TCL TVs, such as the S-Series or Q-Series, but we think HDR10 is sufficient for most viewers and does plenty to enhance contrast, color and details. The Roku TV smart interface is one of the cleanest we’ve seen and is perfect for those who aren’t so tech-savvy. Although not as robust as a Google TV, a Roku TV offers access to plenty of apps and doesn’t clutter the home screen with ads or recommendations. Plus, customization is much more manageable with a Roku TV.
These TVs will be phased out soon in favor of the S-Series and Q-Series, but TCL will likely provide support long after they stop selling them, and if you can snag one when it’s on sale, you’ll be getting a fantastic bargain. The remote is easy to use, the interface is user-friendly and the image quality is solid.
Best for Small Rooms
Audio Technology: Dolby Digital+ | Display Size: 32” | Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Apple AirPlay 2 | HDR Support: No | Resolution: 720p
If you want a TV for a small area in your home, such as a bedroom or kitchen, this 32-inch model is worth a look and costs just $130. It has a bezel-less design for a modern look and Google TV Smart OS, which provides access to hundreds of streaming apps, such as Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, Apple TV+ and more. It works with Alexa, Google Assistant, Apple HomeKit and Apple AirPlay 2, which lets you share content from your phone directly to your TV. Plus, Google TV means you don’t need to connect external streaming devices.
We love this TV because of the value it offers and because it delivers impressive picture and audio quality despite its small screen size. Although it lacks HDR support, it has a dynamic contrast function that boosts image quality with enhanced contrast, so the picture is always sharp and crisp.
Simple Yet Solid
Audio Technology: Dolby Digital+ | Display Size: 40” | Connectivity: Bluetooth, Wi-Fi | HDR Support: HDR10 and HLG | Resolution: 1080p
You’ll have a tough time finding a better smart TV for the same price as the excellent Class S3-Series. The 1080p resolution is standard for TVs of this size, and the image quality is terrific, with vibrant colors and rich visuals. As with many TCL smart TVs, it has an edge-to-edge display for a modern look and built-in Google Assistant.
Google TV offers access to more than 70,000 apps, and you can sign into your existing Google account to keep track of purchases, downloads and streaming options. Plus, you can control other compatible smart devices on your network. You can connect wireless Bluetooth headphones for private listening, and the built-in Chromecast lets you view content from compatible apps. Plus, HDR10 and HLG automatically enhance image contrast and color for an improved viewing experience.
We recommend checking out this TV only if you’re working with a budget. The S5-Series and Q6-Series are better overall than the S3-Series, but this is a fantastic TV for anyone who doesn’t want to spend more than $200. Plus, the 40-inch size makes it versatile enough for viewing in living rooms, family rooms, basements and bedrooms.
We’ve tested many TVs over the years, including models from TCL. For this roundup, we scoured the internet for information provided by customer and user reviews on the best TCL smart TVs. We considered more than a dozen models and determined the best ones by collecting information, thoroughly researching each model and analyzing performance, functionality, specs and features.
The most common screen you’ll see on a modern TV is a light-emitting diode (LED) display, which is a type of liquid crystal display (LCD). Older LED displays have backlights placed along the edge, but modern TVs have an array of LED light bulbs that light up the screen, and this type of display is known as Direct LED. Mini LED displays have LEDs that are half the size of a standard LED and, therefore, can produce greater contrast. In short, Mini LEDs are an improvement over standard LED displays.
QLEDs have quantum dots in the display, which, when hit by light, can produce a broad color spectrum. They’re bright and colorful, making them suitable for casual watching in bright environments. OLEDs, on the other hand, have a panel of OLED subpixels that produce light. This, in turn, allows the TV to create greater contrast and deeper blacks, making OLEDs the best option for a home-theater experience or viewing in low-light conditions.
A 4K resolution is standard for most modern TVs, providing sharp and detailed images. It's especially noticeable on larger screens and is perfect for streaming, gaming and watching UHD content. Smaller TVs and more budget-friendly options usually have resolutions of 720p or 1080p. A 4K resolution is four times sharper than a 1080p resolution.
Known for its user-friendly interface and vast selection of streaming apps, Roku TV used to be integrated into most TCL models, and it’s still an excellent choice for those who want easy access to streaming services. However, these days, TCL integrates the Google TV Smart OS into most of its TVs. It offers a more personalized experience with recommendations based on your viewing habits and integrates with Google services and supports voice control through Google Assistant.
Most TVs have a standard refresh rate of 60 Hz. However, a frame rate of at least 120 Hz is crucial for a smooth gaming experience. It reduces motion blur and provides a more responsive gameplay experience. A variable refresh rate helps prevent screen tearing during gaming, which is particularly useful for fast-paced action games. Low input lag ensures that there’s minimal delay between your controller input and what you see on the screen.
Choose a size that fits well in your space. Larger screens offer a more immersive experience but may not be necessary for smaller rooms. It’s also best to consider the TV’s aesthetic appeal, especially if it will be a focal point in your living room. Slim bezels and a sleek design can enhance the overall look.
Some TCL smart TVs come with enhanced built-in sound systems, but if audio quality is a priority, consider pairing your TV with a sound bar or external speakers. If the TV supports Dolby Atmos, it can deliver a more immersive audio experience, especially when paired with compatible speakers.
You’ll want to ensure the TV has enough HDMI ports for your devices, like gaming consoles, Blu-ray players and streaming devices. eARC is beneficial if you plan to connect the TV to a high-end sound system, as it allows for better audio quality transmission.
